VMware Player Silent Install (How-To Guide)

VMware Workstation Player is a desktop virtualization application. This article will serve as an informative guide and give you a clear understanding of how to perform a silent installation of VMware Player from the command line using both EXE & MSI installers.

How to Install VMware Player Silently

VMware Workstation Player Silent Install (EXE)

  1. Navigate to: https://www.vmware.com/go/getplayer-win
  2. Download the EXE to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)
  3. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  4. Navigate to the C:\Downloads folder
  5. Enter the following command:
    • VMware-player-xx.x.x-xxxxxxxx.exe /s /v/qn EULAS_AGREED=1 AUTOSOFTWAREUPDATE=0 DATACOLLECTION=0 ADDLOCAL=ALL REBOOT=ReallySuppress
  6. Press Enter

After a minute or so you should see the VMware Workstation Player Desktop Shortcut appear. You will also find entries in the Start Menu, Installation Directory, and Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

VMware Workstation Player Silent Install (MSI)

  1. Navigate to: https://www.vmware.com/go/getplayer-win
  2. Download the EXE to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)

  5. Extract the MSI by entering the following command:

  6. Press Enter
  7. Navigate to: “C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\{F0005601-22C2-4044-BE2F-F2A83403B662}~setup” (GUID may vary)
  8. Copy the vcredist_x86.exe, vcredist_x64.exe, and VMwarePlayer.msi to “C:\Downloads”
  9. Enter the following commands:
vcredist_x86.exe /install /quiet /norestart
vcredist_x64.exe /install /quiet /norestart

Create an Installation Log File

The MSI installer offers the option to generate a log file during installation to assist with troubleshooting should any problems arise. You can use the following commands to create a verbose log file with details about the installation.

You can also change the default installation directory by using the following command line parameters. In this example, I’m installing VMware Player to “C:\VMware Player”

Exclude Desktop Shortcut During Install

The VMware Workstation Player installer creates a desktop shortcut by default. If you don’t want the desktop shortcut, then you can run one of the following command line switches to exclude it.
