How to Install KeePass Password Safe Silently

KeePass Password Safe 2.xx Silent Install (EXE)

  1. Download the KeePass Password Safe 2.xx Installer
  2. Download the file to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)
  3. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  4. Navigate to the C:\Downloads folder
  5. Enter the following command:
    • KeePass-2.xx-Setup.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART
  6. Press Enter

After a few moments you should see the KeePass shortcut in the Start Menu, Installation Directory, and Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

Create a KeePass Password Safe Installation Log File

The KeePass Password Safe installer offers the option to generate a log file during installation to assist with troubleshooting should any problems arise. You can use the following commands to create a verbose log file with details about the installation.

Change the KeePass Default Installation Directory

You can also change the default installation directory by using the following command line parameters. In this example, I’m installing KeePass Password Safe to “C:\KeePass Password Safe”

Include KeePass Desktop Shortcut During Install

The KeePass Password Safe installer does NOT create a desktop shortcut by default. If you want the desktop shortcut, then you can run the following command line switches to include it.

Disable KeePass Password Safe Auto Update Check

By default, KeePass Password Safe will automatically check for updates. If you want to disable the auto update check setting you can follow these steps.

  • Open Notepad or your favorite text editor
  • Add the following lines:

  • Save the file and name it: KeePass.config.enforced.xml

  • Copy the KeePass.config.enforced.xml file to “%ProgramFiles%\KeePass Password Safe 2”

KeePass Password Safe 1.xx Silent Install with No Auto Update Check

  • Open Notepad or your favorite text editor
  • Add the following lines:

KeePreferUserConfiguration=False
KeeCheckForUpdate=False
KeeCheckForUpdateConfigured=True
  • Save the file and name it: KeePass.enforced.ini
  • Follow the “How to Install KeePass Password Safe Silently” steps mentioned earlier in the article
  • Copy the KeePass.enforced.ini file to “%ProgramFiles%\KeePass Password Safe” for 32-bit Systems or “%ProgramFiles(x86)%\KeePass Password Safe” for 64-bit Systems
