GeoSetter Silent Install (How-To Guide)

GeoSetter is a freeware tool for Windows for showing and changing geo data and other metadata (IPTC/XMP/Exif) of image files (e.g. images taken by digital cameras). This article will serve as an informative guide and give you a clear understanding of how to perform a silent installation of GeoSetter from the command line using the EXE installer.

How to Install GeoSetter Silently

GeoSetter Silent Install (EXE)

  1. Navigate to: https://geosetter.de/update/geosetter_setup.exe
  2. Download the geosetter_setup.exe to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)
  3. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  4. Navigate to the C:\Downloads folder
  5. Enter the following command: geosetter_setup.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART
  6. Press Enter

After a few moments you will find GeoSetter entries in the Start Menu, Installation Directory, and Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

Create a GeoSetter Installation Log File

The GeoSetter installer offers the option to generate a log file during installation to assist with troubleshooting should any problems arise. You can use the following command to create a verbose log file with details about the installation.

geosetter_setup.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /LOG="%WINDIR%\Temp\GeoSetter-Install.log"

Change the GeoSetter Default Installation Directory

You can also change the default installation directory by using the following command line parameters. In this example, I’m installing GeoSetter to “C:\GeoSetter”

geosetter_setup.exe /DIR="C:\GeoSetter" /VERYSILENT /NORESTART

Include the GeoSetter Desktop Shortcut During Install

The GeoSetter installer does not create a desktop shortcut by default. If you want the desktop shortcut, then you can run the following command line switches to include it.

geosetter_setup.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /MERGETASKS=desktopicon

Disable GeoSetter Automatic Check for Updates

  • Open Notepad or your favorite text editor
  • Add the following lines:
[Misc]
AutocheckForUpdate=0
AutocheckForBetaUpdate=0
AutocheckForExifToolUpdate=0
  • Save the file to C:\Downloads\ and name it: config.ini
  • Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  • Navigate to the C:\Downloads\ folder
  • Enter the following command to copy the config.ini to “C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\GeoSetter\”:
xcopy /y ".\config.ini" "%AppData%\GeoSetter\"

  1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
