ClamAV Silent Install (How-To Guide)

ClamAV is an open-source antivirus engine for detecting trojans, viruses, malware & other malicious threats. This article will serve as an informative guide and give you a clear understanding of how to perform a silent installation of ClamAV from the command line using the MSI installer.

How to Install ClamAV Silently

ClamAV 32-bit Silent Install (MSI)

  1. Navigate to: https://github.com/Cisco-Talos/clamav/releases/latest
  2. Download the clamav-x.y.z.win.win32.msi to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)
  3. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  4. Navigate to the C:\Downloads folder
  5. Enter the following command: MsiExec.exe /i clamav-x.y.z.win.win32.msi ALLUSERS=1 /qn
  6. Press Enter

After a few moments you will find ClamAV entries in the Installation Directory and Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

ClamAV 64-bit Silent Install (MSI)

Create a ClamAV Installation Log File

The ClamAV installer offers the option to generate a log file during installation to assist with troubleshooting should any problems arise. You can use the following commands to create a verbose log file with details about the installation.

MsiExec.exe /i clamav-x.y.z.win.x64.msi ALLUSERS=1 /qn /L*v "%WINDIR%\Temp\ClamAV-Install.log"

Change the ClamAV Default Installation Directory

You can also change the default installation directory by using the following command line parameters. In this example, I’m installing ClamAV to “C:\ClamAV”

MsiExec.exe /i clamav-x.y.z.win.x64.msi ALLUSERS=1 INSTALL_ROOT="C:\ClamAV" /qn
