Azure Data Studio Silent Install (How-To Guide)

Azure Data Studio is a cross-platform database tool for data professionals using the Microsoft family of on-premises and cloud data platforms. This article will serve as an informative guide and give you a clear understanding of how to perform a silent installation of Azure Data Studio from the command line using the EXE installer.

How to Install Azure Data Studio Silently

Microsoft Azure Data Studio Silent Install (EXE)

  1. Navigate to:
  2. Select Windows System Installer
  3. Download the EXE to a folder created at (C:\Downloads)
  4. Open an Elevated Command Prompt by Right-Clicking on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
  5. Navigate to the C:\Downloads folder
  6. Enter the following command:
    • azuredatastudio-windows-setup-x.x.x.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /MERGETASKS=!runcode
  7. Press Enter

After a minute or so you should see the Azure Data Studio shortcut in the Start Menu, Installation Directory, and Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

Create an Installation Log File

The Azure Data Studio installer offers the option to generate a log file during installation to assist with troubleshooting should any problems arise. You can use the following commands to create a verbose log file with details about the installation.

azuredatastudio-windows-setup-x.x.x.exe /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /MERGETASKS=!runcode /LOG="%WINDIR%\Temp\AzureDataStudio-Install.log"

Change Default Installation Directory

You can also change the default installation directory by using the following command line parameters. In this example, I’m installing Azure Data Studio to “C:\Azure Data Studio”

azuredatastudio-windows-setup-x.x.x.exe /DIR="C:\Azure Data Studio" /VERYSILENT /NORESTART /MERGETASKS=!runcode

Include Azure Data Studio Desktop Shortcut During Install

The Azure Data Studio installer does NOT create a desktop shortcut by default. If you want the desktop shortcut, then you can run the following command line switches to include it.
